Sonic and the Secret Rings Remake - Now Available for Steam Deck/Linux!
Sonic and the Secret Rings. I was in my early teens when this game was released for the Wii. I have some pretty good memories of this game. Reviews of the game, however, were mixed. Though the story itself was decent, the in-game mechanics were wonky due to the use of the Wii Remote’s motion controls.
That’s where Project Reignition comes in. This project re-builds Secret Rings from the ground up, while adding several quality-of-life improvements over the original. The great thing is, not only is the project using the Godot engine, but it’s entirely open-source!
As such, I grew curious if I could make a native Steam Deck/Linux version of the project, since releases are currently only available for Windows. While you can just force the game to run with Proton, us Linux nerds want the true, native experience. After working with the primary developer of the project, Kuma-Boo, I can proudly say they have helped me make the Linux port a reality.
I imagine they’ll include Linux builds starting with the next stable release of the project, but in the meantime, you can get native Steam Deck/Linux builds from my GitHub repo. This can easily be done by downloading the script from the README. The script will allow you to compile Project Reignition from source, download a pre-compiled build, view the changelog, and/or add a desktop shortcut to the pre-compiled build. When downloading the pre-compiled build, you also have the choice of downloading the game’s video files. I don’t recommend building from source at the moment, as it’s a bit buggy.
I’d like to add 16:10 support and a Steam Deck graphics preset at some point, but I’ll have to see how I’ll be able to work with the project’s C# source code.
Note that this project is a work-in-progress. Not every mission is available.
